Tres son las tesis que, con el mismo leimotiv: el amor, se exponen en este libro.
En la primera, la correspondiente al fracaso amoroso, el autor hace un estudio del fenómeno amoroso con sus ingredientes sociales, culturales, neurobiológicos, psicopatológicos, etc. Analiza en profundidas y extensión las consecuencias de la destrucción del amor, y singularmente estudia las razones de la violencia contra las mujeres, hecho tan actual y de tan trágicas consecuencias como se advierte en las noticias del día a día.
Con la segunda tesis se hace un repaso de la historia de las ideas estéticas, de la belleza como objeto del amor. L´amore é un appetito di bellezza, decía Lorenzo de Médicis. El autor, en esta segunda parte, utiliza como uno de los ejes vertebradores de su estudio el filme de Visconti Muerte en Venecia.
La tercera tesis está basada en un análisis de la Posmodernidad, época en la que nos encontramos, y que es producto de una mutación sociocultural de consecuencias difíciles aún de evaluar, aunque en la práctica ya se manifiesta, estre otras características, por la manera inédita en la que se desarrollan las relaciones amorosas, teniendo como personaje principal a la mujer llamada ya posmoderna.

De escasa circulación en su momento e inencontrables desde hace años, esos dos volúmenes no pasaron del todo inadvertidos, pues algunos de los relatos fueron seleccionados en antologías con los mejores cuentos de la literatura española del siglo XX. Y es que contienen, sin duda, algunas de las páginas más luminosas y conmovedoras del autor.
Como en las leyendas fundacionales, los primeros relatos parten de un mundo primigenio y mítico (y no menos irónico), en el que las tribus originarias, los Baskardos, deciden su nombre al oír el fragor de las olas contra los acantilados y, como orgullosos "hombres de madera", se resisten al progreso y los inventos técnicos. Sus herederos protagonizan otras historias, de resonancias fabulosas, en las que trafican con ballenas varadas y descubren mujeres hermosas que parecen sirenas. O asisten a otros hitos significativos en la historia de su pueblo, como la irrupción de un ejército de llamas traídas de América, a cuyo jefe de la manada se intenta dar caza como un emblema de la libertad. O son testigos del destino del más poderoso de los "hombres de hierro", entregado en cuerpo y alma a los
altos hornos. Todo se detiene en la segunda parte, en las escenas de una "guerra interminable", que condena a los personajes a la represión y el dolor, de los niños que asisten a la humillación de sus mayores, o de los maestros o incluso los jugadores de fútbol, que nadie está dispuesto a reconocer. En el tono mítico o en el realista, los dos libros muestran, a modo de embriones anticipatorios, algunos de los nudos narrativos de la deslumbrante trilogía Verdes valles, colinas rojas. Y descubren la poderosa imaginación y la diestra versatilidad de un narrador de talla excepcional, que ya en estos libros supo con clarividencia que estaba construyendo un universo propio, inagotable y autosuficiente: un Getxo en el que se condensaba y cifraba la historia de todo un país.
